Ride Reports

Red Plate Monday Ride Report – 08-07-24.

The Sporting Motorcycle Club embarked on its weekly Red Plate ride this morning. Led by the seasoned and skilled rider Mal Loone, and expertly supported by the well organised Ross Johnston as the tail rider, a group of 17 die hard enthusiastic riders set off promptly at the regular meeting point through crisp & still conditions.

The route that Mal had chosen took the group out of Geelong and towards the scenic Great Ocean Road, past the iconic Bells Beach, and towards the charming town of Anglesea. The riders enjoyed the breathtaking coastal views and the refreshing breeze as they made their way along the winding roads.

Once past Bells Beach, the group turned inland and headed towards the Moriac General Store, a popular destination among riders. The wood fire at the store provided welcoming warmth, where the riders could rest, defrost & recharge over a hot beverage and warm snack.

Thanks to everyone who came along on the ride, a great effort for the middle of winter, and special thanks to Mal for leading, Ross for being the tail rider & Guy for taking the photos and providing the report

Hope to see you on next Monday’s Red Plate ride.

Red Plate Monday Ride Report – 01-07-24.

On a chilly Monday morning, the Red Plate die-hards of the Sporting Motorcycle Club braved the inclement weather for their weekly ride.

Despite the cold and wet conditions, the group of dedicated riders gathered at the normal meeting point, eager to hit the open road.

Among them was Phil Nelson, who spent a few moments meticulously adjusting his bike before setting off.

The route took them along winding roads of the Barrabool hills and onto Winchelsea, then turning inland towards Inverleigh, the group encountered patches of mist and drizzle & cold southerly winds, adding an element of challenge to their journey.

Upon arriving in Inverleigh, the riders found a cozy café serving hot refreshments and delicious treats.

Refreshed and rejuvenated, the riders made their own ways back to Geelong. As they made their way through the countryside, the sun began to peek through the clouds but still only getting to a chilly 12c.

Hats off to Phil and the group for braving the conditions.

4th Sunday Ride Report – June 2024.

On a bright and sunny Sunday morning, the Sporting Motorcycle Club organised a captivating combo Dirt & Road ride to Forrest, attracting approximately 35 eager members. The gathering point was the South Geelong clubroom, where the members assembled at 9 am, met with a crisp 9°C.

Beak, the highly experienced adventure rider, led the way for the Dirt route, while Jumbo spearheaded the Road ride along his 2nd home the Great Ocean Road. Shortly after 9:30 am, both groups embarked on their respective routes.

The Dirt group relished in near-perfect riding conditions. The tracks that Beak meticulously chose were in pristine condition, boasting neither dust nor excessive moisture, making for an optimal riding experience.

Jumbo, on the other hand, encountered some notable highlights during the Road ride. As the group traversed through Lorne and Skenes Creek, they ascended the winding hills of the Otways, also leading them to their destination of Forrest.

Along the way, Anthony experienced a radiator issue, while Magoo’s fuel supply dwindled. However, the group’s preparedness shone through as one member carried epoxy hole repair, and another had a 1L mini Jerry Can on hand.

Dave Quinn, unfortunately, encountered a nail in his tire and sought assistance from a family member for a pickup.

A special mention goes to Rod, who assumed the responsibility of being the Tail End Charlie during the Road ride, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.

Upon reaching the Forrest Brewery, both groups were warmly welcomed by the friendly and efficient staff. The riders were treated to delectable coffees and a delightful lunch, which just topped off a perfect day out.

Once fed and watered the group departed Forrest and made their own way back into Geelong, With Beak finding it hard to resist keeping off the dirt, while Jim chose to turn around and head back down along the coast for his return trip home.

Thanks to everyone who participated today, special thanks to Beak, Jim & Rod. Hope to see you on the next ride.
